As a Speech Language Pathologist, I work with students age 5-11 who have mild-to-severe communication needs. Many of these students have diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder or other developmental delays, and many students have trouble expressing their ideas clearly. My students are engaging, eager, and work hard to connect with others. They are joyful and passionate students who benefit from a large-team approach to help them learn!
My students use a variety of systems to express their needs, including assistive technology, core boards, and picture exchange systems.
They benefit from engaging, hand-on activities with repetition to support their learning of new ideas. I collaborate with a variety of teams across the school to find ways to help our students find their voice and share their amazing ideas with their peers!
My colleagues and I have been working on ways to engage our students in culturally responsive ways. We are looking forward to expanding our toolkit to support and engage student learning.
My Project
I use books in so many different activities in my speech therapy sessions. They are used to work on speech sounds, vocabulary, grammar, inferencing and sequencing. I modify stories to work with students of all communication levels!
I want my students to see themselves in the books I use in our sessions, and I want them to learn about other cultures as well.
Students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and disabled students are underrepresented in children's literature and I want to change that. Help my students get updated books to help them be seen in literature, as well as gain empathy and understanding for others who are different.
