Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

At PS 154 in the South Bronx, NY, my students are avid learners and hard workers. They want nothing more than to learn everything they can about the world around them. The downfall is that I do not have the resources necessary for my students\' learning potential to be met. Specifically, I need an overhead projector and necessary materials (markers, transparencies, light bulbs), to help my students reach their fullest potential. One may ask why an overhead projector is so important. There are several reasons. First, an overhead projector allows the teacher to keep an eye on the class, as opposed to turning her back to write on the board. This helps with classroom management. It has been found that whether a classroom is managed well or not is the best indicator of whether students will learn in that classroom. Second, an overhead projector allows the teacher to prepare well ahead of time the material necessary to review, thus allowing more time for instruction. For example, if I am able to make a transparency the night or week before, I do not need to waste class time writing information on the board while the students wait so everyone can have the same information in front of them (which is what is currently occurring in my classroom). Finally, with an overhead projector, going over homework, tests, and even new material, becomes exciting and interesting. The lights are off, there is a \"cool\" projection on the screen, and students are captivated. In a class filled with both special and general education students, it is a constant challenge to make topics and tasks interesting, new, and/or exciting. An overhead projector will be a simple way for me to keep them excited and focused on what we are learning. When students are not focused, they are not learning. My students need and deserve the right to the necessary resources that will maximize their potential as learners. I want nothing more than to help them reach for the stars, but I need your help. Please consider this proposal for my students!
