My Students

I have been a kindergarten teacher for the past 27 years, and I love it every day! This past year I have decided to challenge myself by moving to a new school. My new school is located in a very diverse section of the city. In fact, there are over 30 different languages spoken by students and families.

Most of my children live in homes that struggle to make ends meet.

Most of our students come from generational families that recognize that the only true chance they have to get out of our neighborhood is through the opportunities that education can bring. However, despite all the daily challenges that I face teaching in an inner-city school I am never discouraged. I love my job. I love my children. I try my best every day to make a positive difference in my students' lives.

My Project

Teaching reading is a complex task. We no longer teach to a whole class at one time. We have learned that if you work in a small group, students learn at a much higher rate. Teaching students to love and understand reading is the greatest gift I can give to my students. A table like this, allows me to work with students in a small group, but still in a formal setting. By placing students at a learning table like this I am able to help them better focus, and therefore become better readers!
