This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are an amazing group of people! They have incredible hearts despite tough circumstances. Each of them come from what seems to be poor economic backgrounds. There are single and two parent families, single parent working two jobs, grandparents raising grandchildren, and foster families with in my classroom. Many of my students have seen violence within the home and in the streets. This trauma to children has a great impact on their learning.
Presently, this third grade class is academically at a first grade level.
Emotionally and socially I would say they are at a kindergarten level. Rage is a common classroom problem. I deal with it using patience and compassion.
My Project
My students practice reading in small groups daily with teacher. These materials will engage my students in nonfiction and possibly open a career path for them. Presently, their world is filled with some sort of trauma. It would be awesome to open their eyes to things outside their pain.
Student who are not working with me are still grouped and are working on other centers.
The listen to reading center will accomplish something all my students love and that is to listen to a story being read to them. I chose a set of read-alongs most likely at their level.
