I work with urban high school kids, primarily teaching digital media production and photography. Our school is going through yet another round of budget cuts. With class sizes often reaching 30+, and the rising costs of supplies, it's difficult to get any funding even for small projects.
My inner-city kids are beating the odds and going to college... but they need more help. I spend a lot of time with my seniors working on college applications, prepping for the SAT's and filling our financial aid forms. In a school where only 40% go on to college, it's exciting to be working with so many kids who want to reach their dreams of higher education.
We have outdated SAT prep books and could really use new ones. This will enable the students to study for the test. Very few of them have the opportunity to access these materials, or the expensive private test-prep classes. These books will allow me to help my students score higher, and get more scholarship money, which they so desperately need.
