My students need 5 copies of the DSM-5, a copy of the DSM-5 Clinical Studies book, a Brain Lab book, true mirrors, large Post-It notes, dry erase markers, prism glasses, & other supplies for AP Psychology.
My students are a rainbow of cultural and socioeconomic diversity in a rich urban environment. They are both artistically and academically motivated in their learning as they attend an arts/performing arts high school in which they have specific majors of study in the arts. They are also college-oriented and so choose rigorous preparatory coursework such as College Board-level Advanced Placement classes. They also enjoy expressing their knowledge and their art through classroom discussions and debates, group work, and hands-on experiments and projects.
My Project
The AP Psychology curriculum is dense and broad. It ranges from tangible, scientific topics such as neurology to less tangible, yet relevant, social science topics such as personality. I have been teaching this course for over 4 years and the best way to present the material is through hands-on learning.
High school children are going through an important and turbulent transition in their physical, mental, and emotional well-being as they become adults.
As a result, many take AP Psychology in order to better understand themselves and others around them.
The materials requested will be added to others acquired from DonorsChoose so that more of my students can access these specially designed hands-on activities in a single, 45-minute class period. The activities will bring the psychological theories to life and create memorable experiences that will be easy to recall when they take their College Board exam in May.
The DSM-5 books, DSM-5 guides, Post-It notes, dry erase markers, dry erase erasers, mulicolored paper, and printer ink will be used during group work and jig-saw activities so that students can explore the topics of Abnormal Psychology and Treatment of Abnormal Psychology.
The external DVD drive and HDMI cable are important in order to show students psychology documentaries, video clips, etc. and allow the 16 major concepts to be connected to the real world.
The Brain Lab book,prism glasses, true mirror, and watercolor paint will be used in activities that highlight the topics of Biological Bases of Behavior, Sensation and Perception, and Personality.
