Help my Students Enjoy Learning

My students need to be fascinated by specimens showing how organ systems of mammals are organized. An actual rat specimen will hold their attention.

My Students

My students do not have enough equipment that can help them visualize and enjoy learning scientific facts and concepts. Last week, I found some specimens of preserved bats, and assorted mollusks. The students were so excited - word spread around the school. That day the students loved the lesson!

I work in a public girls school in a neighborhood where everyone seems to know someone near and dear who got shot.

These are girls from hard-working families, who believe that a good education will help them to earn a better lifestyle. My students put a lot of effort into projects and homework. However, the lack of materials makes teaching science challenging. What should be fun becomes just plain difficult with only text, and no actual models and activities to work with. Playdough and paper projects are not as much fun, nor as educational as real models. Please, please help me make learning fun. A science class could be more fun than a magic show - help me to make it so.

My Project

The rat specimen will be a fascinating visual for my students, and when we are learning about the body systems - a real model of how the body systems are arranged in a mammals body will help them to remember. It will also arouse their curiosity. With this specimen, my students can build their own models of the various body systems in our bodies. They will see how animal body systems work to accomplish the different life functions. They will learn that living organisms have a lot in common.

Please help students enjoy their learning.

I teach 12, 13, 14, and 15 year old girls. This is the turning point in their lives - where they can either start to enjoy learning science, and accept the challenges that come with embracing this discipline, or, be bored and unable to visualize scientific concepts - and then set themselves on a path where they believe that science is 'too difficult'. Many of my students dream of going into the medical field. Help me get them there.
