I teach in Title I rural school. My students come from homes where sometimes they need to take care of several siblings while their parents work two or more jobs. As a media specialist, my students read over 22,000 books last year, a very impressive achievement. It’s a fact that reading improves their test scores and helps them develop life long reading habits that will help them in whatever they choose to do with their lives. My students have access to only 8000 books in our media center so as you might guess they are well used and are showing age. These students are reading well but I would like to continue to spark their interest in reading with some new books. I have seen students grow from kids that only read for their AR scores to children that read just for the love of it.
My Project
These books are about kids like them. They need to see themselves in these characters so they can make life choices. When they read about experiences they are going to soon be thrown into or situations they can empathize with - they grow. That's what reading does, it models for students how to cope with the world. It shows them the many, many opportunities life presents for them. Some are painful, some are joyful, but all of them spark their imagination. They are for the most part good reader, they need to discover they can make their own choices about what they can read so they can become wild readers!
