Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We want to explore! Many of my students live in apartments or mobile homes with no yards in which to play or learn about their world. Their families often don't have the disposable income to provide their children with the opportunities that will build a solid scientific foundation in their lives.
My students are 4 year old Transitional Kindergarten students.
They are in a new grade level in our state. These students are eager to learn as they are beginning school. Our school is a Title 1, program improvement school. Many of my students are English learners. Most of them are language impoverished, despite having English as their first language. Their vocabulary is minimal at best. They need broad and varied experiences with the language of scientific exploration.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will enrich the lives of these children. Each experiment with magnets, magnifying glasses, colors, sand, and water will not only open their minds to the excitement of science, but will also provide opportunities for language development. Currently, the science component of our curriculum is minimal and I want my students to be able to explore with these resources in their hands. I will be able to have science centers that will provide materials for each child. My students will develop a love and appreciation for science in their formative years.
These students need a solid introduction to science--one they will eagerly embrace--as we raise them to be the next generation of leaders in our global economy.
Will you partner with me in making small dreams into big realities?
