This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." ~Sir Richard Steele. This quote is so true. If I can get my students, at this young age, hooked on reading, they will be readers for their lifetime.

I teach all subjects in a sixth grade class.

I have 36 students. 40% of my students are learning English as a second language. 87% of students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. This means, these students live at or below the poverty line. My students come from diverse backgrounds and family lives. My students come from different living arrangements, from homeless, multiple families in the home, motel, apartments, or middle class homes. Although my students may come to school with outside challenges, they know their purpose at school is to learn. You'd never know any of my students had these outside challenges, because they are a great group of students.

My Project

California was hit hard with budget cuts that impacted public education. Our school purchases the basic school supplies, but asking for anything outside of those basic school supplies can not be fulfilled. I would love to do an author study on Jerry Spinelli. Jerry Spinelli has a voice in these books, and reading multiple books by him, will allow my students to hear/feel the author's voice. In addition, his characters are quirky and odd, which many of my students relate to. I remember going through those pre-pubescent years, and feeling I did not quite fit in. Many of my students are in that place in their lives, too. Asking students to each purchase their own books, is too much to ask, especially when their parents are just trying to make ends meet.

It will also impact lives of students I will teach in the future, because we will use that same set of books. Each student will have a book, to do this author study. Many will be reading a book they relate to, this will all be done, in the hopes, of creating some aspiring authors.
