As a sixth-grade Language Arts teacher working at my former school, Nash Central Middle School in Nashville, NC, I am excited to be able to try to help the kids from my old neighborhood. I went to school with, or at least know, their older siblings and parents. It's a tough job, and I am fighting hard to prove that I am worthy of the responsibility. It is very discouraging to hear just about every one of my students complain that he or she hates to read. "None of this stuff means anything to me." "I don't care about these people. What do they have to do with me?" These are complaints I hear on a daily basis, and while I try hard to counteract them, 6th graders aren't known for their logical thinking. They know what they like, and reading is not it. Because of this aversion to books, nearly half of my students are unfortunately reading significantly below grade level. They keep getting more and more discouraged as the material gets harder. I do what I can to make my classroom an inviting environment in order to motivate my students to read. In an effort to peak their interest, I set out to find a book that would be more relevant to their experiences - something that they could relate to or something that they would find interesting. I believe I found this in the book "Scorpions" by Walter Dean Myers. The book is about a young boy, about my students' age, who tries his best to avoid tough situations in life, but seems to always get pulled in different directions. It's a wonderful story that I believe my students could really get into, and one that I think could make them like reading. I would love to share this experience with them as a class. While this book is on the approved list for my school, we unfortunately do not have a class set. Sharing this book with my class would be a great way to encourage them to enjoy reading, and I hope to somehow make this possible for them.
