My Students

By the end of this school year I want my students to think about how they will be remembered and know that they have made a positive impact on their fellow classmates' lives. "When given a choice between being right or being kind, choose kind." - Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

My class is a group of curious thinkers, adventuresome leaders, and the best way to stoke these qualities is through reading new and interesting books.

Read to Self time, as it's called in my classroom, is their favorite time of day. It enables my students that may not have access to books at home the ability to utilize our classroom library and read from many different genres while getting recommendations from other students as well. My students are a group of kids that are so eager to read. On our first day of school, their main question was, "When can we check-out books from the class library?!" I want to give them all of the access to new and classic novels I possibly can! This project can make a huge impact on their lives and character development.

My Project

I not only want my students to learn all they can about the basic subjects I teach, I also want them to gain the necessary skills to become great people! Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a book that tells the story of a boy who is different from all of his classmates. He has a facial deformity that makes it difficult for him to do daily tasks the way his classmates do. Some other students adapt to his presence in a positive way, and others do not. The project I have planned with this book is a portfolio application. Students will learn about and recognize many positive character traits and form an application to get accepted into the fictional school from the story. They will show examples of how they practice these positive traits through the completion of various task cards, writing reflections, and recommendation letters from peers. At the end of the project, students will 'send in' their applications and eagerly await the arrival of their acceptance letters.

It is through the study of his book that I will be able to help students understand that while people around may have different needs than their own, we all want to be treated with kindness.

I truly believe that this book has the ability to change the minds of some of my students for the better. Is is through seeing our sometimes poor choices in others that we realize it is time to make better decisions to achieve our best possible self.
