Help me give my students the chance to see a character like them in a book, and learn to enjoy (and be more comfortable with! ) reading at the same time!
Our school is incredibly diverse, incredibly amazing, and incredibly socio-economically challenged. When it comes to reading, we have students who are amazing readers, we have students who need extra support, and we have students who need an extra push to learn what their reading "thing" is.
The goal of my DonorsChoose project is to help students figure out what their reading "thing" is so that they can become lifelong readers.
So many students thing that reading isn't cool, or worse yet--that reading is something that is only done in school and nowhere else.
Through helping to fund my DonorsChoose projects, you will help students who may not have ever caught the reading bug to do so. Maybe it's that they've never seen someone like them in a book. Maybe it's that they've never been shown a book that interests them. My goal, through these projects, is to make sure that each student catches the reading bug.
My Project
This project will create a book club for students who are English Language Learners. Often, these are students who shy away from reading as much as possible. This is for several different reasons--maybe they are uncomfortable with reading, maybe they don't like reading, or maybe they can't connect with the text.
This book, "The First Rule of Punk," will allow students who don't normally see themselves in literature to identify with a character who looks and sounds like they do.
One of the first steps to creating a lifelong reader is to make the reader love to read. You can't love to read a book you can't connect with. This book has a Latina lead character, with lots of Latinx supporting characters. She goes through experiences that Latinx students will be able to identify with. In theory, the students will be able to connect with her and want to read her story. They will also learn that books can be something they can connect with--and will ultimately want to connect with.
