Help! My Class Needs Nonfiction Books!

My students need many nonfiction animal books for a reading and writing unit. They also need center activities that will extend their animal research.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom begins with students reading from their reading bags. As they enter the classroom, they begin each day reading books they chose at their reading level. I begin each day this way to improve the reading skills of my students and help them to develop a love for reading.

My students are enthusiastic first graders.

They are always excited to share what they learned with each other. They also enjoy collaborating with classmates, and really enjoy activities that provide them the opportunity to work with partners in the classroom.

My Project

My first graders are excited about beginning a nonfiction animal unit. My class needs more nonfiction books to make this unit effective for all learners in the classroom. During Reading Workshop, students will read nonfiction books, and during Writing Workshop students will write nonfiction books. In the next phase of the unit students will explore a variety of animal nonfiction books and continue to read and write about animals. In the last part of the unit students will sort all the books we have collected into animal groups in which students will read and write about their expert animal. Students will work in the following expert groups mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish. In their expert groups students will work together, collaborate, discuss, and write what they learned about their animal group from their research.

These resources will make it possible for me to have a variety of books at different levels.

It will put the resources in students hands, and allow even students that are just beginning readers to be researchers. It will also provide books to challenge every reader in my classroom. My students will someday be doctors, scientists, nurses, veterinarians, authors, firefighters, police officers, and teachers. They are the future!
