My Students

I teach at a title one school in Mesa, Arizona. Our school provides free breakfast to all families and the majority of our students are also provided free lunches as well. We run a program sending about 1/4 of our families home with food over the weekends every week.

Last year I had three homeless students in my class and this year I have four.

Many of my other students families are still barely making ends meet. Last year was my first year at the school and I was in survival mode just making sure to meet their academic needs. This year, I want to do more than that.

I have already spent hundreds of dollars to revamp my classroom as much as possible on my own to turn it into a more comfortable “home” environment that many of them long for. I want to make this a room these kids not only flourish academically in, but feel comfortable and happy emotionally as well. I just need help to get the last few things I cannot afford on my own for these wonderful little people!

My Project

These hands on literacy materials will help make learning to read their favorite part of the day! They can go fishing for sight words with the soft word fishing game, unlock their letter digraphs and blends with the hands on lock activity, touch their CVC words to sound out and blend to read, and make their sight words with stamps instead of writing them down the old fashioned way!

If I am excited thinking about all these amazing literacy games, imagine the joy it will bring 23 six year olds!

The students at our school have previously tested far below the average for the state in reading. Last year, my students made amazing progress but still had a long way to go. This year, I think incorporating more hands on activities and games will help give them that extra push to want to learn more and motivate them to keep learning!
