it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach Biology at a Title I high school in Richmond, California. My students are chronically underserved and have experienced high staff turnover during their entire K-12 journey. As a new teacher to my school, I want to demonstrate to them that I am here to stay. I've been a science teacher for seven years, and my passion for science stems from my own high school Biology teacher, who had several ball pythons in her classroom. Interacting and caring for these reptiles gave me a deep appreciation for living things and all it takes to sustain life on Earth.
My wishlist is comprised of the basic items my students and I need to set up a terrarium for a ball python in my Biology class.
I plan on using our pet to demonstrate many different concepts in Biology: homeostasis, ecology, the cycling of matter/energy, etc. To have a direct example in the classroom would make these big ideas more directly observable. Additionally, the process of cleaning tanks, checking the temperature/humidity, and feeding a reptile would help my students develop socio-emotional skills.
