This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Math is an essential skill my students must master to be successful in college and in life. I am a NYC Teaching Fellow in my fourth year. Our school is a high-need public school, but unique in that the learning is almost entirely project-based. Students are empowered to pursue their passions and even spend two days a week working with an expert mentor in their field of interest.

We currently have one calculator in good working condition that must be passed around the room during our math hour. Students are often frustrated by the lack of supplies and waste precious minutes waiting for their peers to finish using the calculator so they may have a turn. Others are forced to use the calculator function on the computers in our room, but it is far less efficient than an actual calculator.

Providing our classroom with such basic equipment as calculators will enable each student to practice his/her math without the current roadblock of limited resources.

You will make it possible for each of my students to complete their math assignments without waiting for the one calculator we currently have to arrive at their desk. A more efficient math hour will enable us to complete more math assignments! The more math I can help my students learn, the more of an advantage they will have in this highly competitive economy!
