Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to read! Many of my 2nd graders are reading chapter books and have fallen in love with Patricia Reilly Giff's Kids of Polk Street School. The problem is,these books are often checked out at the library. Having 4 classroom sets would mean my kids would always have access!
I teach at an urban school where over 95% of my students are second-language and come from very poor families.
I get to work with 15 amazing second graders who love their school and both recognize and appreciate the wonderful opportunities we are creating for them. These children encourage and support each other and we truly have a "family feeling" in my classroom. Their curiosity and thirst for knowledge along with the enthusiasm with which they embrace learning every day inspires me to do everything I can to be the best role model, mentor and teacher possible for them.
My Project
We have a wonderful reading program that has instilled in these children a strong desire to read! Over half of my second graders are reading at a third or fourth grade level and I am so proud of them all! I encourage them to challenge themselves and they enjoy reading chapter books. Having 4 sets of books will give me the chance to teach my students in small groups how to successfully read chapter books. Gaining a strong foundation early of how to read chapter books without losing interest will inspire them to continue their love of reading which will serve them well for the rest of their lives!
My heart breaks every time one of my students returns from the library and tells me the "Kids of Polk Street School" books are all checked out.
They have come to love these books and it would mean so much for me to have classroom sets so that they can always have access and be able to read them together in small groups. I am so grateful for any assistance you can provide for my students as they come from home environments where they have very little.
