This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching 5th graders in East Harlem (for over 10 years now!), I've learned that the scope of their world is unfortunately only East Harlem. A few have gone to Disney World or have visited relatives in Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic, but that's it. Most think that Canada and Mexico are part of the United States!
I LOVE bringing the world to my students. I travel the world during summer vacation and return to teach about that slice of the world.
I usually use a wonderful geography book to help me teach about time zones, latitude and longitude, the different hemispheres, climates, etc. Now, however the school will no longer purchase these workbooks. All funding is going towards reading and math.
We have a BIG Social Studies test in November and this book is invaluable in their learning. It's not a complicated workbook and teaches sometimes difficult topics in a way that's accessible to all.
I expect to have 32 students next year (YES, 32!) and would love to have a workbook for each student. We won't write in it, so that I can use it for a few years with new students until they fall apart. I'd love a few extra workbooks just in case as well and a teacher's guide too please!
I'm hoping that my love of travel will be instilled in yet another group of wonderful kids!
