My Students

Every day, as a class, we read and listen to books. The students love the adventures we get to go on through the stories. I would like to extend this experience into the students' small groups so they can see that reading/listening to books can be done in big and small groups, and individually too.

My students are a lively bunch of kids who have a wide variety of interests, but one thing they all have in common is their love for listening to stories.

They all love the adventures we get to go on through reading books, but at this point in the school year very few of them are fluent readers, which makes them dependent on someone else in order to go on these adventures. As a whole, our school shows a love for learning and reading. Throughout each day we have at least 3 hours built into our schedules that are dedicated solely to language arts and reading in hopes that we can instill a love for these subjects into each and every student.

My Project

This project is all about giving my students access to audio books so they can read along with a fluent reader, in hopes of helping them become fluent readers themselves. I have requested headphones and books (audio and physical copies) in hopes of having a quality, well-stocked listening center. Each day my students spend an hour rotating through literacy centers. When they are at the listening center they will follow along in their copy of the book while listening to the audio version. With the help of this project, my students will have access to many different kinds of books, informative and narrative, that will speak to many different interests. I believe giving them this opportunity (the chance of becoming a better reader) with books they will enjoy will make them enjoy reading more.

Donations to my project will improve my classroom by giving my students the opportunity to hear several different stories that span several different genres and topics.

I believe this opportunity will make them excited about reading and books, and keep them coming back for more. While creating excitement in the children, it will also help them become better readers- it will keep their learning process fun.
