My Students
My students are historically curious high schoolers who reside in a rural area in the Great State of Maine. These kiddos are motivated self-starters who are delving into the 1960's of their own free choice. I am looking to engage them even further with the subject matter. They are students who need multiple forms of instruction and I am looking to use literature to peek their interests and broaden their horizons. This semester, I would love to expose them to the book, "The Help".
My Project
I am teaching a class this semester about the chaos that was the 1960's in the United States. My students will be discussing everything from Camelot to the Civil Rights movement. I am looking to have my students read the novel "The Help" and to bring into sharper focus the socioeconomic climate of the 1960's and what led to the fight for equality and Civil Rights.
My students come from a relatively sheltered climate where they have minimal to no exposure to diversity.
I feel these sorts of novels bring into their conscientiousness what realities exist outside their rural roots.
