My Students

My students are young scientists participating in a class that allows them to study their surroundings. As a new teacher, my chemistry+ EnviSci classes are ones that I am working to pack with as much project based learning as possible. I believe that students who are able to engage these concepts hands on will become more well rounded in their understandings of the whole discipline. My students are all a part of the school's Environmental Science Academy, which is a program that focuses on science in their surroundings. Part of the draw of this program is the number of opportunities it offers to engineer and design solutions for the future. They are enthusiastic builders, learners, and scientists.

The variety of experiences that my students bring into the classroom helps to cultivate scientific debate and discussion that is fed by a variety of perspectives.

This diverse group of scientists hails from one of the most culturally rich cities in the country, Oakland, CA.

These kids are all such great learners. They deserve to have just as many resources and classroom materials as their peers in more affluent peers.

My Project

The only working computer in my room is currently from 2006. Students are constantly grappling with it just to get it to turn on.

I would like to be able to illustrate just how serious climate change is to my students, and give them the opportunity to interpret the hard data of climate change.

This new computer is just powerful enough to run many of the storm simulators we want to see, and has the portability to take out into the field if necessary. Students will be able to use it for simulations, data collection, and to create simple animations to illustrate their findings. Climate change is real, and we need powerful tools to understand it in order to fight it.
