Help Motivate My Kindergarteners to Read

My students need motivation to read independently. Accelerated Reader is a program that provides motivation and acknowledgment.

My Students

Students need lots of reading practice. In kindergarten, reading is hard work! Accelerated Reader motivates students to read because it produces an individualized report for each quiz taken. Read a book, take a quiz, and you have a report to show to everyone (and documentation for the teacher)!

I teach in a public school where 99% of my students qualify for free lunch.

I have 30 students in a whole day program with no aide. My students are eager learners who want to learn to read. They are at varying levels of readiness. I have five who are ready to be reading independently right now. I have several more who are very close to that level.

My Project

With Accelerated Reader(AR)available to my students, they can get the reading practice they need. The program acknowledges their efforts and rewards their success with certificates as they achieve new goals. A student reads a book independently, takes a quiz and receives immediate feedback in the form of a TOPS report. This report shows the score for the quiz, total points earned, average percent correct, average reading level, and progress toward their next certificate. The report lets parents see exactly how their child is doing in reading. This AR license will allow almost half our students k-8 to take advantage of this highly motivational and rewarding program. The program offers quizzes for hundreds of books at all the elementary school reading levels. So, by helping me secure this license, you will be providing motivation for independent reading to 240 students at different grade levels! Students who need encouragement and motivation to practice reading. Practice makes perfect!

Once our students master the mechanics of reading and can read for pleasure, there is little time available in the school day.

From 3rd grade through 8th grade reading in school is for serious academic work. AR puts the fun in reading. Our students need to experience reading for pleasure. AR provides the motivation to get our students reading books they chose on topics they find entertaining. If they're having fun, they'll read more. The more they read the better readers they will become!
