Help Me Span The Digital Divide With An LCD Projector

My students need an LCD projector to be able to access the immense world available to them only on the internet.

I am asked, "Is it true you are NOT using the vast resources on the internet in your classroom?" and I have to admit that my classroom lacks the necessary equipment to be able to do that.

I just read an article telling how today's kids actually think differently than most of us older folks. This is because they are what the article's author calls "digital natives". They have grown up using nothing but digital "stuff", from t.v.'s to IPOD's to Play Stations to cell phones to text messages to computers that even check their spelling for them. They are HUNGRY for information that can best be provided for them via the world wide web. There are thousands of great video clips, some short, some longer, that would serve to greatly enhance learning in my 5th grade classroom. My students don't have access to those resources because we lack an LCD projector in the room.

If we had an LCD projector in the classroom, that, coupled with my own personal laptop computer and our school's internet hook-up, would enable me to access video clips on just about any subject that interests the kids and that is standards-based and appropriate for their learning. We are being left behind in this digital "information age" because of lack of funds to be able to purchase a projector. Our school has ONE projector, which is kept in the computer lab and used solely by the computer lab teacher. To have an LCD projector of our own in the room would open up whole new vistas to these students, many of whom do not have internet access at their own homes.

YOUR help would make it possible for my students to get connected at any point that I deem appropriate during a particular lesson; we could watch interesting video clips pertaining to the topic at hand. The students would remain actively engaged in their learning because they would respond so positively to that technology being used in the classroom. You have no idea what a difference YOU could make by providing an LCD projector for my 5th graders.
