Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a group of amazingly motivated students from a low-income, low-performing neighborhood in Los Angeles. They are students who are a part of the Advanced Placement United States History class, my SAT Prep class, or my Advancement Via Individual Determination classes.
My students wake up early in the morning to get to review sessions on time, attend class once a month at a local university for an AP Readiness class that I teach, and give up multiple days during their Thanksgiving and Spring Break to practice their writing skills.
Some of my students have low reading skills and take 5-6 hours to read and take notes on a chapter that could be finished in 3-4 hours. Though they struggle mightily, the most important thing is that they are learning GRIT and working towards refining their skills. The College Board research has proven that though a student may not pass the AP test in May, simply taking a class will give them a higher chance of graduating college.
My Project
This laptop will help me get to the next level with my instructional videos. On our current schedule, we only see our students for 3.5 hours a week per class. This is 21 hours less per semester that we do not see our students compared to 5 years ago. I need more face time with my students, and this is achieved through the videos that I make using SCREENCASTOMATIC.
Not all students can stay for tutoring or come early in the morning.
My instructional videos make up for the lost time. The students will watch these videos and practice for their teachback in APUSH and SAT. I will use my computer to make SAT Prep Math videos for EVERY problem that I go over with my students so that they never feel alone and frustrated with their math.
The computer I am currently using is on its last leg because it is from 2012. With this computer, I am able to achieve grand feats such as having an 80% pass rate on my AP United States History test when the national pass rate is 53%. I also have many students increasing on their SAT with an average of 150. I've also continued on with my National Boards Certification when my district would not support me with the fees, which were thousands of dollars. I have taken a job at a prestigious local university to teach AP Readiness to low-income high school students in the greater area and have also been chosen to be an AP Reader to score the exams.
I will also use this computer to continue taking Gilder Lehrman Institute summer classes. I was chosen to study in New Orleans this summer and learned so much and brought the information to my classroom.
