My Students

My students are non-verbal autistic children. Most of my students are from single parent homes. Some are bused from out of the area due to their autism diagnosis. My classroom is one of two autism classrooms in our end of our county for the elementary level. Being able to not only recognize alphabetical letters, but be able to communicate those are critical skills. If a child should become lost or separated from their guardian, being able to tell someone their name by writing, pointing, or using any type of communication such as blocks or a writing table, would greatly increase their chances of being returned quickly. Letter tiles, writing tables, and spelling blocks ate just a few things that would help make the skill of name and letter recognition possible. Autistic students are visual hands on learners. Having the right tools to enhance their reading and writing skills would allow them more opportunities to improve that skill.

My Project

Autism students struggle with letter and number recognition. The goals for my students are to be able to recognize the letters of their name, be able to arrange them in the correct order and then to write them.

Hand eye coordination is a vital key to the process of writing and reading.

Using tile letters, or a writing tool that is more interesting over regular paper and pencil, will help with this critical skill. Learning must be hands on, visual, and fun for any hope of retention with Autistic students.
