Have you ever seen the pride and joy in a child's face when he or she reads independently for the first time? That is the feeling I want my kindergarten students to have.
My students are 95% African-American, living in Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York.
For many of them, my kindergarten class will be the first time they have ever touched a book. Brownsville is a low-income community where many people live below the poverty line. We know that education is one way to break the cycle of poverty, and we know that the earlier children start reading, the more likely it is that they will continue to do so for the rest of their lives. I want to my students to be life long readers. Please help me make that happen with a generous donation of any amount you can afford.
My Project
The classroom materials that I have chosen will be used everyday to inspire, support and encourage students by breaking the learning process into small, achievable steps. In this way students will acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence necessary for them to read on their own.
I chose materials that address the needs of all students in my class based on their abilities. For example, the Phonemic Awareness Instant Learning Center addresses the needs of the students who are at the early stages of their literacy skills. The Vocabulary Folder Game and the Word Work Folder Game target the students who already know the sounds of the letter and are able to sound out the letter to make the words, and Getting Ready to Read Activity Boxes challenges the students who have demonstrated the readiness to read Kindergarten level books with achievable tasks.
Like public schools everywhere, my school's budget is cut to the bone and so we simply can't afford to buy products like these on our own.
The Brownsville community also has very limited resources to contribute to the support of our classrooms. Your donation will help make sure the students in my class get the quality education they deserve.
