My Students
Each year I get the opportunity to give my students a firm foundation in learning. As a kindergarten teacher, I am awarded the unique opportunity to foster my young students' curiosity for learning and often times, I get to be the first formal teacher many of them have. My school recently lost funding for our pre-k program, which has created more struggles for my students who so desperately need those early childhood learning and socialization experiences. Many of my students overcome huge battles as a part of living in a rural community. The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic homes, some of my students battle instability in their families in many forms. I teach in a Title I school, where most of my students receive free or reduced lunch. What is unique about my experience in my community is that I am teaching in the same elementary school where I attended. I have lived in this community most of my life and I know and understand what life as a child is like for the students growing up in our rural community. I love to see my Kinders learn and overcome despite all the challenges they face.
My Project
The regional Get Your Teach On (GYTO) conference is held in Charlotte, NC this year and I couldn’t be more excited about it! Charlotte is about two hours from my school but this conference will be so worth the drive. GYTO is founded by educational professionals, Deanna Jump and Hope King and promises to help teachers jump-start their passion for creating life-long learners. Sessions are focused on grade-specific strategies and ideas to make classrooms more engaging and in turn, creating students who are eager to learn. As a teacher, I am eager to learn new and innovative strategies to help me become more effective and empowering in the classroom.
