My students need 12 sets of headphones to: a) watch teacher-made mathematics videos, b) cancel out noise while taking assessments, and c) allow them to focus while others are actively learning. Thank you for your consideration!
For many of my students, math is not their favorite subject and I get it!
I teach a variety of classes including Algebra 1, Algebra 1 AB (struggling students), and Transitional Mathematics (a course designed for senior students who if they earn a C or better are guaranteed admittance into a credit-bearing mathematics course in an Illinois Junior College).
The students in my mathematics classes range from 9th to 12 grade. For many of my students, math is not their favorite subject and I get it. For the most part, I truly believe it is because they think they aren't capable of "getting it". My goal is to change this "fixed mindset" into a "growth mindset" where mistakes are known to help the mind grow. The projects that I will try to fund through Donors Choose will be used to help all of our students. Thank you for all that you do!

My Project
The Goal of this project is to provide students with the necessary supplies (in particular, HEADPHONES) to be successful. Our mathematics department (with the help of our Professional Development Department and administration) are really trying hard to meet the needs of all of our students by providing them with a different type of learning tool. We are so excited about this evidence-based teaching called "Flipped Learning".
Redirecting the attention from the teacher to the learner involves a combination of interactive video lessons and discovery learning activities.
In the past we have expected students to complete the most challenging exercises at home, most of the time without any support. Now, we can introduce the topic and have students try the most basic skills at home, while providing them with teacher and peer support during class. Another crucial benefit from this type of learning is that we get to form positive relationships with ALL of our students.
We were fortunate enough to have Jon Bergmann come help get started on this transition. Jon is a pioneer of the Flipped Classroom Movement, best-selling author, and has traveled all over the world coordinating or guiding flipped learning initiatives.
This individualized learning means that there is going to be a lot going on during a class period. We need HEADPHONES to allow students to listen to videos (for review), as well as using them as a Noise-Cancelling agent to allow students to FOCUS while taking assessments or when they want to focus while active learning is going on around them.
