Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As an English teacher in a Title I school in East Oakland, I have struggled to interest many of my students in reading. This is because a) they are bored by the content, which is often totally irrelevant to their life experiences, and/or b) they read on a very low level and have difficulty finding books that they are accessable to them. To help my students momentarily tune out the world and learn to love reading, I have them read silently with a book of their choice for at least 30 minutes during class every week. We have a limited choice of books. Most of them choose books from my small classroom library, usually because they haven't been able to get to the public library, purchase books of their own, or get help at our school library, whose resources--human and material--are strained. Although my students definitely understand the value of the literary canon that makes up the majority of our 11th and 12th grade curriculum, they also love reading works that are closer to their worlds. This is especially true for those written by African-American and Hispanic writers (African-American and Hispanic students make up 35 and 50 percent of my classes, respectively). When it comes to literacy, my students have a long way to go in order to compete with other students at the collegiate level. Having access to books that are both interesting to them and written on their level will help enormously in that endeavor.
