Our friends and supporters of the middle school library are aware of the difficulties we have faced as we try to update our previously neglected and aged shelves. Just five years ago, the average age of our holdings was 1965. Thanks to many generous donations, our fiction section is making progress and is starting to appear far more attractive, relevant, and engaging to our students.
Most of our nonfiction holdings, however, are still outdated; in fact, we have large content areas with little to no representation at all.
These holes are especially obvious during research assignments in Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts classes. Currently our library shelves have little to offer our eager researchers. Although we can use databases and reliable online sources for research, many of our teachers want students to have access to at least one printed source of information. Even the students themselves, who have become intrigued by their topic of choice, want to read more after the project is complete. We want to keep this enthusiasm alive by having these books on hand. Therefore, we have created this DonorsChoose wish list of books by using the most requested titles from just three recent research projects students have completed this year.
