This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are fiery, independent-thinkers with a knack for supporting their peers and critically engaging with the things we're learning. While my students and I are never lacking (we are about as resourceful as they come), there are times where I find myself wishing I had certain things to help me facilitate learning and/or continue cultivating my laid-back, productive classroom environment (which research shows us produces higher-level and higher-quality learning!)

Each of these items listed will contribute to the development of our classroom home (environment) and community; the two foundational blocks through which learning can blossom!

As a "first-semester" teacher (I was the student-teacher last semester), I've often found myself scrambling to fill in the gaps of what we have in the classroom, sometimes mid-lesson. With class sets of clip boards and whiteboards, students would have more freedom to walk around the room (gallery walks, think-pair-shares) and diversified options for participating in class discussions, lectures, and reviews (whiteboards are an incredibly diverse tool to have in the classroom!)The other items, like the bean bag chairs and lamps, though not directly connected to classroom instruction, do help to cultivate a more productive learning environment.

The last "grouping" of items on my list include resources around and activities to open conversations about mental health and wellbeing. Our students are dealing with traumas, stresses and anxieties at levels and frequencies that are unprecedented. I firmly believe that one of my core responsibilities as an educator is to provide love, support and resources for our students who are struggling with their mental health.
