Help me give my students a student-centered learning environment that really looks and feels like a foreign language (Spanish) classroom. Students specifically requested many of these items to make the space what they need to learn and grow, including a map, globe, posters, games, and artifacts.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) school serving a diverse group of over 450 urban students in grades 6-12. Our mission is to prepare our students to succeed in college and beyond, by providing them with the 21st century skills to contribute meaningfully in the global workforce.
Teaching our students Spanish as a second language encourages multiculturalism through bilingualism and is an important part of achieving our school's mission because Spanish is the second most used language in international communication.
Therefore, our graduates complete two years of formal language study (or show evidence of previous proficiency in another language).
Our school has the challenge of being in "Turnaround Status" and in the past our students have experienced failures due to inadequate resources. I teach Spanish I and Spanish II to over 55 hardworking students. My students are in need of foreign language resources that will allow me to provide differentiated instruction, to meet students where they are and to ensure that all students matter in the classroom, no matter how much exposure they have had to learning another language. My Project
Help make our class feel like a foreign country!
My students and I want to make our classroom look and feel like a foreign country!
My students and I just moved into a new school building, and we have little material to decorate our classroom. We want to see Spanish everywhere in our classroom by strategically decorating our space to create the feeling of being in a foreign country like Spain, Costa Rica, or Perú.
We imagine having a world map, Spanish posters with inspirational sayings, anchor charts with common verbs, high frequency vocabulary like colors, weather expressions, days of the week, numbers etc. as well as "The Spanish Corner", a comfortable reading space that provides a language immersion experience with lots of authentic cultural items in which to interact. We envision a student materials desk with a globe, Spanish-English dictionaries, Spanish board games and other cultural artifacts like Mexican calabras, candy skulls, tiny flags of the 22 Spanish speaking countries.
My students requested many of these materials specifically because they say they need these things in order to learn and grow a lot. Other items are ones I have added to to create a more integrated curriculum experience as I know they will be of use throughout my years of teaching, not just this year .
These materials will make a huge difference in how my students feel when the are in the learning area because they will create a kind of subconscious learning. Students will also benefit from building associations between vocabulary, imagery, cultural practices and the Spanish language. Please us make our vision a reality by making a donate today.
