My Students

We use math countless times every day, often without realizing it. Behind every purchase you make at the supermarket, cake you bake in your kitchen, and home redecoration project you do, someone taught you money, measurement and geometric shapes! My students need inspiration to learn real-life math.

My students are Lakota from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

They attend a Lakota culture immersion school, and the rich history and values of the reservation is an important part of our daily schooling. My students are witty, bright, and funny---and all boys, except for one girl who keeps the balance in our classroom! My students love horses, kickball, and enjoying the incredible outdoors where we live. They also love ghosts, zombies, bigfoot stories, Transformers, and watching lion attacks on youtube. Together, we are working hard to master what seem like foreign math concepts at first glance and make them pertinent to our own lives. Our school was recently featured on the ABC 20/20 documentary "Hidden America: Children of the Plains." If you've seen the special, you know how badly our students want and need a quality education!

My Project

Third grade math can look like an alien language when introduced for the first time. Concepts like money, measurement and order of operations can be tough for any 8-year-old the first time around. but are even more so when more than half of the students are several grade levels behind in math, as is the case in our class. Despite this, my students are all very driven to learn math, and excited about working extra hard to get to grade level this year. In order to help them do this, I need to provide materials that cater to all the different learning styles in our classroom. Without manipulatives or overhead materials, it is very difficult to give the visual and hands-on learners a fair chance. Our math lessons now often take the form of me talking and students filling in worksheets which is boring! These math kits will provide everything our class needs so that we can ALL learn, including sets of manipulatives for each student, and overhead manipulatives so that students can follow along on the board.

Without a solid math foundation, my students will struggle in school every year from now on.

It is a sad thing to see discouragement on the face of an 8- or 9-year-old who "just doesn't get it," because the lesson itself is ineffective. These math kits will really improve the quality of math instruction in our classroom, and help every one of my students reach their math dreams!
