My Students

R.D. Cumming’s once said, “A good book has no ending." I find this quote inspirational in my teaching of first grade students. Sadly, my low readers in my classroom do not have enough books on their level to learn that good books have no ending. Help us add new books!

I teach in a first grade class in a Title-One school serving a low-income community.

We participate in the Accelerated Reader program. Even though our school library has a plethora of books, many of them are above the level needed for my first graders. During the year, students' A.R. level increases but each student needs a proper amount of low level books to give them a beginning interest in reading.

My Project

I am seeking to add beginning A.R. books with an ATOS level of 0.1 – 0.5. These books are hard to come by. As a matter of fact, out of the 300 books that Accelerated Reader provides test over on this level, only 46 are still in print. The various books I have selected specifically will meet the needs of my lower leveled readers. By supporting this project, you will be putting books in the hands of young children just beginning to gain a joy for reading. What is better than giving a child the opportunity to read?

If you choose to support my project, you will be not only giving the children the ability to find out that good books have no ending.

Instead and most importantly, you will be placing an on level book in the hands of beginning readers and giving them the powerful joy of reading. This project will not only help my current students but help my students for years to come. Thank you so much for considering my project!
