This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our middle school is growing each and every year. We are in a low income, Title I school district where 85% of our student population is Hispanic and 100% of our students receive free breakfast & lunch. The students in our area struggle through language barriers and are the first generation graduates from 8th grade. Most students lack life skills which prepare them for the future. Resources are limited and we are limited in the tools and supplies needed for hands on learning projects.
Our Life Skills class includes students who have special needs and a wide range of abilities.
They need a chance to explore using hands-on activities as much as possible. Students are eager and excited to learn, so the more exploration opportunities and experiences given to them, the better they will be prepared for the future.
Like any other school, budgets are small and don't allow for the purchase of many types of supplies and materials needed to run a program to its fullest potential. We are hoping to get what we need, so students get their hands busy, become creative, and move beyond paper pencil activities. I want students to gain skills to become capable adults.
My Project
These crafting tools will allow middle schoolers to learn wire wrapping, beading, and clay sculpting to enhance skills into the future. Giving middle school students a new craft will lead to more engaged learning, with less social media time, and increase their kinesthetic skills to reduce inactivity.
Confidence boosting, relaxing, anxiety reducing abilities can make a difference in middle school students lives right now.
With the pandemic limiting their interaction with peer group learning and hands-on skills, students will learn the trade of wire wrapping pendants, making bracelets, rings, etc. This experience will allows student to have pride in their work, in order to take it to the next level and market creations into their own businesses. Putting these tools into their hands will make a difference for their future.
