Help Literacy Students Publish Their Own Books

My students need 5 digital cameras.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

I teach 10th grade literacy classes at an alternative public high school in New York. Our literacy program is designed to help struggling readers be prepared for high school and college level reading and writing.

Our current project is called "Digital Storytelling." I've arranged for students to publish hard cover, professional quality books about issues in their communities. They are really excited about composing meaningful stories and photographing their communities. However, I do not have enough digital cameras for the students to use.

To make this project really work and to keep our students engaged, I need 5 more digital cameras. With these cameras, we will be able to "go into the field" and really explore ways to communicate their concerns. And the depth of their concerns is impressive - for example, how teenage boys get drawn into things that hurt their education. The combination of meaningful topics and great technology will really help students present their ideas and practice writing about things that matter to them. The end result will be a published book that they will read to younger students as part of our school's literacy program.

Your help would make it possible for my students to express themselves in this exciting way. I can't imagine a more exciting way to develop literacy skills than to write, photograph, and publish books. And I believe that students who develop a passion for writing will be more likely to pursue college goals. Your help could really make a difference.
