My Students

Coming from some of the toughest and financially strapped neighborhoods in NYC, our students do not often have the extra money when it comes to making purchases. On a regular basis, our students hear that they can not overcome where they live, and that this is just the life they will have. A good percentage of our student population reside in live-in shelters or foster homes and do not have regular access to purchasing new clothes, and wear clothes repetitively until they cannot be worn anymore.

Rather than letting a divide happen in our school between those students who are fortunate enough to have these products, we would like to create a school-based pantry that will be secret but can be accessed on the needs of the students.

No student should be ashamed of coming to school because they do not have clean clothes, or better yet have more than one outfit. It is our job as care-givers and educators to remove this barrier!

My Project

As a teenager, school is more than just about learning the most relevant math formula, or the main causes of World War II. To a teenager, school is about learning, yes, but it is also about feeling good and looking good. With a large student population who is considered to be transient, either in group homes, or living within a homeless shelter, sometimes having nice clothes is an afterthought. Sometimes this even will prevent our at-risk students from coming to school.

Rather than letting this become an obstacle, we have created Lillian's Locker, which in secret can provide our students with needed items to encourage them to remain at school and to sustain attendance.

The biggest obstacle to eliminate poor attendance for our at-risk student population is to provide them access to clothing and/or personal care supplies that will decrease the stigma of not having been dealt the best hand in life.
