My Students

The students at my school are from a rural farm community in Indiana. We have a small school at the edge of a large corporation. Our students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds. We are lucky to have great families that work hard and are involved in our school events, but we don't get a lot of extra funding from the state because our school does not qualify as a Title I school. Title I schools have a higher level of students that qualify for free and reduced-price lunches than we currently have.

My sweet kiddos are hard workers, but they have lots of extra energy and thrive during hands-on activities.

We try to keep moving around our classroom several times throughout the day to help with this. I also have tried to incorporate a flexible seating environment to keep their little bodies wiggling, while engaged in learning, while at our seats. We have had a lot of success when we use hands-on manipulatives and activities.

I love to provide learning opportunities that will get my students moving, thinking, and stimulating their learning by creating.

My Project

My young students need activities to keep them active and engaged while learning. The hopscotch rug and bean bag toss board will be perfect to use various ways during both literacy stations and even math activities. They can toss a bean bag and whatever hole they make it in then they have to pull out a letter and say the letter name and sound. Using the Hopscotch Rug they can hop to the end and pick up a letter, number, or shape card and have to name it to take it back with them. There are so many possibilities to use these items in our classroom. Plus various art supplies like the picture frames, play-dough kit, ink daubers, ink pads, and sensory beads the kids can explore and create lots of different activities at the Art Center.

My young students thrive when they are having fun learning and all these activities will keep them all active and engaged and they won't even realize they are learning at the same time!

In my classroom that is the best kind of learning. They think they are doing fun activities and all the while they really are learning. Center time is their favorite part of the day and I pull my leveled reading groups at this time, so if I keep them busy learning then I can pull my other students in small groups and teach and reinforce the skills they need effectively without interruptions from the Center groups!
