Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 6th and 7th grade mathematics at MS 223, The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology. Our school is located in the South Bronx in what was the worst school in NYC. 95% of our students receive free lunches from the federal government. That is a telling sign of the poverty and neglect that many of our students face on a daily basis. Many of our girls and boys have bodies that are changing. This presents a serious academic problem. Girls often miss school or leave early because they don't have feminine products. Not only is it embarrassing to be forced leave school because of a natural part of growing up but students are missing instruction and that hurts their chances for economic success in life. A second equally serious problem is that many students can't afford deodorant and Middle School students perspire. This creates an opportunity for students to be humiliated and embarrassed by something they have no control over. Please help keep our students healthy and in school by funding this grant.
