Help! It's Cold on that Floor!

My students need 2 classroom carpets so they can have a safe, warm and cozy floor space where they can read and learn.

My Students

Have you ever seen a "No Crossing" or a "High Voltage" sign? These are warning signs that imply some type of danger if not followed. At this moment, they are signs that should probably be posted in my classroom. This is because of wires, cords and plugs that are strewn across the front of our room

My 6th graders are hard-working, easily-excitable and like most 11 years-olds, a little clumsy at times.

They attend a very large urban middle school that can be very intimidating to newcomers such as themselves. However, they manage to brave the hallways and the cafeteria and find their way to my classroom at least once a day. The very least I can do for them is to keep my door open and my classroom safe.

My Project

In this particular case, safety means keeping the floor space clear of wires. It also means creating floor spaces that can be learning-friendly. These solid floors are not the kind you’d want to fall on. We do a great number of projects and classroom activities throughout the year that require them to move around or break into groups all over the classroom. The very front of our room has a lot of wires that lead to a laptop, projector and newly acquired SmartBoard. A new carpet would allow us to to cover up the wires so little feet can cross over them without a worry. Students would also be able to access the SmartBoard themselves and not trip over any of these wires. In addition to the front of our room, I have also carved out a small reading nook near growing classroom library. A carpet there would set an inviting and encouraging tone to this area.

Overall, our classroom is small and we would love to be able to utilize every bit of space we can!

For some of my students, I am the first teacher they will see on the first day of school. This means, this is the first middle school classroom they will step into. I do not want their first impressions to be of wires and danger. Instead, I want them to feel welcome, comfortable and ready to work!
