My kindergarten class of 20 students is composed of eight different nationalities, many of whom do not speak English at home. Roughly eighty percent of the families in my classroom are immigrants to the United States and are of low socio-economic status. Due to the lack of funding in the Arts, my students often miss out on valuable experiences in drama and the visual arts. I am limited in my abilities to teach both because of mandated curricula in other areas deemed more important by the state. It is also difficult to teach art with potentially messy materials to 20 five-year olds with only myself to lead and monitor them. With this in mind, I would love to take my class to a theater production of Aesop\'s Fables at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco on February 22, 2006. We focus on Aesop\'s Fables in our Language Arts program in the Fall, so my students would be familiar and engaged in the stories. Tying in the visual arts, this production uses puppets (by acclaimed puppeteer Jim West) to bring the fables to life. It also includes the music of Scarlatti, Beethoven and Chopin. This experience would be a great springboard for creating and using our own puppets in the classroom to explore Language Arts and other literature while developing English proficiency in non-native speakers and expanding it for native speakers. Every aspect of this production of Aesop\'s Fables would tie in beautifully with our regular classroom instruction in Language Arts and Social Studies, and provide much needed exposure to the visual and performing arts. Since our school is made up of primarily low income families, we tend not to go on field trips that cost money. However, this is one trip that I do not want to pass up. I have 20 students and would take four chaperones as well. In all I need 24 tickets for my class to attend this production. I feel that this is a fantastic opportunity for my kindergarten class on so many levels both academically and socially. This would be an enriching and amazing treat for the students (and chaperones too) in my class.
