This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many of my students arrive early to school and use my classroom as a hang-out/rec center where they feel safe and can hang out with their friends. Each morning, they use a beat-up ping pong table and compete with their friends before homeroom. Those same 30-40 students come during lunch and sometimes after school. I currently get bread donations from our local market and students are able to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches each day before school and during lunch. My students have used a donated ping pong table that is barely surviving and oftentimes falls apart. I have repaired it several times by reinforcing it with 2 by 4s and screws, but it doesn't quite play true and needs constant maintenance. It's been on its last legs for years.

A new ping-pong table would allow more students to play, increase morale, spark interest in more students playing, and continue to improve attendance.

Students have been asking for a new table for years, and I know it would make a difference. It would also encourage more students to participate, which may lead to better attendance for even more students.
