I am a sixth grade English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in a very poor community in Brooklyn, New York. My children are beginning-level English language learners, and they love to learn English through literature. At their level, one of the best ways of learning English and enjoying books is through shared reading. This is when the teacher reads aloud from a book that all of the students have in front of them. They follow along with their eyes while I read, but the most difficult thing about this is that it requires a copy of the same book for every child. This is where our classroom library is coming up short! I would love to get my students a class set (25) of the book "The Chocolate Touch" by Catling. It's about a boy who turns everything he touches to chocolate. This book is at a perfect level for my children, and I believe they would love the subject matter as well! The publisher Perfection Learning puts out a great book set for teachers called Portals to Reading. It includes the set of novels, along with a teacher resource book with lesson ideas and a poster portraying the book for the classroom. My students would enjoy a new novel SO much! Please help us enjoy the gift of reading together.
