I am a seventh grade English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in a very poor area of Brooklyn, NY. My students are beginning-level English language learners from all over the world. They come from Pakistan, Mexico, Nepal, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Panama. I had all of them in sixth grade, and I am now their seventh grade teacher. I am incredibly close to this group of students since I've been their teacher for so long. However, having the same students for a second year in a row means that I can't use the same books that I used last year and in previous years. This year, I would like to do a Todd Strasser author study with my students. Todd Strasser is a children's author who has a series called "Help! I'm Trapped..." There are 17 books in the series, which focus on an eighth grade boy who gets trapped inside various people, including his teacher, his gym teacher, the lunch lady, the president, and many more. I would like to start our author study with the first book in the series, called, "Help! I'm Trapped In My Teacher's Body!" It is a chapter book that would be extremely fun for my class, while being easy enough for my beginners to understand. It's really hard to find books that are at an easy enough reading level for my students, without them feeling like they're reading baby books. My goal is to read at least four of the books in the series this school year with my class, and culminate the unit with a visit from Todd Strasser himself to my school. Please help us enjoy these books together as a class. Thank you!
