I teach students in grades 6, 7, & 8 in an urban school district. We are a Title 1 school. My students are very diverse. There are almost a thousand students in my school, many of whom are immigrants, just learning the English language. Through the use of SIOP instruction (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) we teach and help our students to speak the language of our subjects and lead to quicker acquisition of English language skills.
There are also students of varying degrees of special needs.
These students are in the special education program and are integrated into all parts of our music program, General music, Band, Orchestra, and Chorus.
In my experience, it is a challenge for many Middle School students to sing in tune, or stay in tune. This is especially true for the boys whose voices are changing. I work with students in small groups, and sometimes individually, to help them better hear what they are supposed to sing, and in turn reproduce the desired pitch and tone.
My students need tablets so that they can measure how well they are matching pitch.
There are special apps designed to help train the singing voice. Apps such as SingSharp, SwiftScales, and Voice Training, will help the students discover their range and monitor their progress. They will be able to work independently and record their voice for later assessment while I work with other students, or the large group.
