Help Give My Students New and Exciting Novels to Read!
My students need new and exciting young adult novels in a variety of levels from a diversity of authors to spark their reading through the entire school year!
Our school is a public charter school in San Diego that strives to foster diverse thinking through project based learning. More than half of our students receive free and reduced lunch and we pull students from almost every zip code in San Diego. They come from all backgrounds and learn to discuss issues of American history in my Humanities class while learning ways to write and share their own stories with their peers and the world. We combine a focus on classic and modern literature with historical research and writing in order to make history a living, breathing subject that is shown to shape our present day issues and perspectives.
My Project
Our school, while amazing, does not have a central library. In order to spark my students' love of reading and continue to fan that spark throughout the year, we need new and exciting young adult novels to balance the classic literature we engage with as a class. These books include poetry, series, fantasy, and realistic fiction from authors who speak to the diversity of the teen experience - real and imagined.
Students in my classroom spend 15 to 25 minutes a day reading independent novels and often go through anywhere from five to twenty books in a school year.
In this assortment of books, there are many series and books by the same author, which help students to take charge of their reading by zooming through a world that they can engage with or a style that speaks to them. Help grow our library and help students in the class of 2023 and beyond!
