This year, I plan to focus on the difficult relationship that US history has with a variety of populations - people of color, people with disabilities, and disenfranchised and to demonstrate how our language about these populations has shifted and continues to shift. We will be using two core classic novels - Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mockingbird - and creating rich projects around these novels in order to encourage students to develop their perspectives on US history.
For our To Kill a Mockingbird project, students will select a character and develop a life story for that character and write a first-personal journal from that character's perspective at another point in their life. This project combines perspective writing, historical research, material culture, and character analysis.
We are developing our project for Of Mice and Men, but early drafts of the project will focus on neurodiversity and the understanding of the Oakies and people affected by the Great Depression and how it contributes to California's own history.
