Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students were affected by Hurricane Harvey and then by two floods last year. Most of their homes, as well as areas of our school, still get flooded with heavy rain. Most of them qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are smart and very eager to learn, but they lack resources. There’s no time for homework because they have to help their parents at work or to care for the house. The only opportunity they have to express their knowledge is during the school day. They don’t have money for extras. Every dollar they have goes towards paying the light and putting food on the table. We teachers are the ones who buy the school supplies, the snacks, and the colorful book boxes, and things to make the class fun because they simply can’t afford them.
My Project
Most of my student's families struggle to put food on the table. So, buying books is not something they can afford to gift their children. These books will help my students have engaging books in their native language that they can read in the classroom and possibly check out to read at home. It will help grow successful readers and will encourage the love of books and learning. Most school students struggle with reading and the gap keeps growing as they go higher in grade level. But, if we teach them from early on to read well and love books, there is no limit to how far they can go. Your contribution might help the next Edison or Shakespeare.
