Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse backgrounds. I teach at a Title 1 Program Improvement public school in South San Jose. I teach at a school that has a bilingual Spanish strand up through 4rd grade. The families of most of my students come from Mexico, Central America, and Vietnam. I teach 6th grade and have around 33 6th graders each year.
Our school is unique in that it's the only school in our district that is a "Leader in Me" School.
All teachers have gone through a professional development course that has taught us how to guide our students to be leaders in and out of the classroom. It is based on Steven and Sean Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It is a really amazing program and I am proud to work here, despite the fact that we are a Title 1, program improvement school. I love working at this school among fantastic coworkers and our skilled principal leader.
My Project
The outdoor science learning experience that YMCA Camp Campbell provides 5th and 6th graders in the South Bay Area is an unforgettable learning experience for the students. For most of the students at this South San Jose Title I public school, it is the very first time they will be away from their families for an overnight. For many of them, it's the first time they will go on a long hike and be outside in nature and the redwood trees. They spend four days in nature, mostly outside, even in the rain and braving the elements. They learn about caring for our environment and global warming, nature's cycles, and are encouraged to make new friends from other schools, develop more social skills, and acquire more independence away from home. This is an incredibly valuable learning experience for the students, and we encourage all students to participate.
